9 Tips For A Well Designed Website

Doing business on the web involves giving people a reason to come to your site, and a reason to stay once they arrive. It's important for businesses to set themselves apart from generic sites created from boxed software that as a result, your site looks like everyone else.

The most innovative company can look dull if it uses poor design. Many businesses are reluctant to dive into the internet unless they can control all the risks - perceived and unperceived - that may be associated online. The real risk is in delaying it's implementation until your business is simply a follower, rather than a leader. 9 Steps to a world class website.

Here are our 9 Tips to creating a well-designed web site:

Step One:

Set your budget realistically. Get several bids, take their average and then add a few more thousand dollars to the average.

It's better to over estimate than under budget.

Step Two:

Check out the firm you choose. Ask for references and previous work.

Too many companies make empty promises and can't deliver what they say they can.

Step Three:

Keep your site informative. The content of your website is very important.

You may even consider using professional copyrighting as it plays a major role in search engine rankings.

Make sure contact information is listed clearly with phone number, address and contact name.

Step Four:

Research your competition.

Go to their sites, see the features they use and borrow the best ones.

Some might call it stealing, but consultants call it "best practices". Lets face it just about everything that can be done on the Internet, has already been done.

Step Five:

Speed is King, NO page on your site should take longer than 9 seconds to load. Stick to the 9Second Rule

Step Six:

Be sure to put everything in writing.

When you hire a design firm, make sure a plan is agreed upon between both parties and are set with realistic timelines.

Have both parties sign off on this agreement.

Step Seven:

Once development begins, don't alter the original scope - that can get very costly.

Instead spend your money promoting your site.

Step Eight:

Don't be afraid to meet your "Go Live date". In the web world, it's better to go live and make minor tweaks, than postpone, postpone, postpone.

If you don't meet your "go live date" all your info may already be outdated.

Step Nine:

Make updates frequently - at least monthly.

There is nothing worse than an outdated web site.
